How is the Quran organised and how to read it?
First of all the Quran is divided in chapters that we call Surah. Their are 114 Surah.
Each one of them has one or more titles according to the subjects they speak about. For instance the Four first Surahs of the Quran are :
-
Al fatiha (The opening) الفاتحة ,
-
AL baqarah (The Cow) البقرة,
-
Ali 3imran (Imran family) آل عمران,
-
Annissa (Women) النّساء.
Every Surah is also made of various numbers of verses. The shorters contain 3 verses and the longest, Surah Al baQarah contains 286 of them.
The word « verse » is translated by Ayah in singular and Ayat in its plural form. A Verse ends by this little sign with a number inside it : .
Now that we know what is Surah and what is an Ayah. Let’s focus on two other words : the Hizab and the Jouz.
Those words are pretty difficult to translate since the word Hizab for exemple can have many meaning. One of them is « part », so we can say that the Quran is composed of 60 parts.
In the last edition of the Quran, we can find 10 to 11 pages in each hizab (part). Therefor if somenone reads 11 pages daily, he or she will be able to complete the reading of The Book in 60 days.
So far, I thik we’re good, everyting is clear !
Now what about the word Jouz… So let’s focus… : One Jouz is composed of 2 hizab. So we can easily understand that the Quran has 30 Jouz since 60:2= 30. And if a Hizab contains 11 pages, a Jouz contains 22.
Admit it, I made your head spin… ! Do not worry, it’s quiet simple actually. You juste need to keep in mind that :
-
if someone wants to read the Quran in 2 months (60 days), he needs to reade 11 pages daily AKA a Hizab,
-
if someone wants to read The Quran in one month (30 days), he needs to read 22 pages daily, AKA a Jouz.
By the way, a mind map is available at the end of this article for you to get a summary of these informations.
It has been reported in many narations that the companions of the Prophet ﷺ used to read The Holy Book much faster than this :
It was reported from Abu Salamah, from Abdullah bin Amr (RA) that the Prophet (PBUH) said, “Recite the Qur’an in one month.” He responded, “I find myself (more) energetic.” The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Recite it in twenty (days).” He responded, “I find myself (more) energetic.” The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Recite it in fifteen.” He responded, “I find myself (more) energetic.” The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Recite it in ten.” He responded, “I find myself (more) energetic.” So he (the Prophet, PBUH) said, “Recite it in seven and do not do more than that.”
(Hadith No. 1388, Chapters pertaining to the Month of Ramadan, Sunan Abu Dawud, Vol. 2).
Thus it’s easy to do the math, if one can finish his reading in a month by reading 22 pages then if he doubles this amount he will finish in 15 days and so on and so forth…
However, as it is mentionned in the Hadith above, it is not advised to read the Quran in less than 7 days. In fact, the main purpose here is to meditate upon what Allah ﷻ is telling his believers, and the more you hurry the more you make it difficult to reflect upon those beautiful verses. We have to try our best to act upon what we read. If we accounter a verse that tells us about something that Allah ﷻ dislikes, we need to do our best to get as far as we can from it. And when we read about one specific action that will grant us the love of Allah ﷻ , we need to do our utmost to act upon it…
The rest of the explanations concerning this subjet, will be given in the next article, indeed I need to give more details.
